Multi-million-pound investment to improve safety at our hospitals

We have some of the oldest NHS estate in the country, but we are making some essential improvements at Torbay Hospital, thanks to £2.367million of government funding.
We are pleased to have received the money from the Estates Safety Fund, which will allow us to upgrade the ventilation in our cancer services, install roof edge protection, undertake fire safety improvements and enhance our water system.
This funding is in addition to the £7.3million we received earlier this year to replace air handling units and undertake refurbishment in our day and eye surgery theatres; support the structural remedial works on the tower block; replace roofing that is in poor condition and support electricity compliancy works.
These works will help us to address the most urgent risks across our ageing estate, and help to prevent cancelled appointments and operations.
Joe Teape said: “We are determined to do everything we can to keep our patients and staff safe. This latest amount of funding will help us to tackle more of these risks, but we continue to make the case for significant investment in our estate and the resources we need to deliver modern, fit-for-purpose facilities for the people we serve .
“I want to thank our teams who work tirelessly to keep services running safely and smoothly. Your efforts make a real difference every day.”
Emergency Department update: preparing for phase one handover
Our work to expand our Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital is gathering pace. The new waiting room and first floor spaces are a hive of activity, with painting, silicone finishing, installation of final fixtures and testing of fire alarms all underway.
Work to install handrails, ramp surfacing and tarmacking outside the building will be taking place during the coming weeks, while inside the building new flooring is being installed and a reception desk is being put into its new home.

We want to say a huge thank you to our construction partners, Nevada, the project team and our ED colleagues who are all working hard to make sure our new, larger Emergency Department space is open as soon as possible. We’ll share more details with you in the next edition of Healthy Futures.
