Faster care for neuro patients
Receiving timely care has a big impact on patient outcomes and people who are recovering from a stroke or brain injury and managing a long term neurological conditional are getting the help they need more quickly, thanks to a new one-stop-shop clinic.
Our community neuro rehab team wanted to do more to improve the care and support it provides, while managing an increased demand for help, by setting up a new group clinic. People can be assessed and agree a personalised treatment plan with clinicians, meet other people who are managing similar conditions and connect with local support groups under one roof.
The new approach has helped reduce waiting lists from 10 to five months between September 2025 and January 2026.
Amy Davey, Advanced Clinical Practitioner for Stroke and Neuro Rehab at Newton Abbot Hospital said: “We want to do all we can to support people who are struggling to keep an active lifestyle with their long term neurological conidtion.”
“We thought outside of the box about how we could see the growing list of people who wanted help quicker and came up with the new one-stop concept where people can talk to a specialist about their condition and agree a treatment plan. Having a neurological condition can be incredibly isolating so we wanted to create an opportunity for people to meet others who are in a similar situation and talk to organisations and the voluntary sector about what additional support is available in the community to increase confidence in self managing their condition”.
“We’ve had really great feedback and people have told us they appreciate having everything in one place, at the same time as their appointment so they don’t have to keep coming back to hospital to meet someone new. Personalising their care and how they manage their appointments helps put people in control of their treatment plan and feel like an active participant, which is great for them and their recovery.”

Thank you to the Torbay Hospital Nurses’ League
We’re incredibly grateful to our Torbay Hospital Nurses’ League, which generously raises funds to support our nurses by hosting events throughout the year.

Earlier this month, the Nurses League organised an Easter fayre to help raise funds that go directly back into supporting our colleagues. We’re especially grateful for the wellbeing boxes now being delivered to nursing and midwifery colleagues on our wards, offering small but meaningful moments of kindness to those caring for patients every day.
For more than 80 years, Torbay Hospital Nurses’ League have been nurses caring for nurses. That long‑standing commitment to looking after one another continues to make a real difference, particularly at a time when our teams are working so hard across all our services.
