Our clinical education team is shortlisted for a prestigious national award
Our unique partnership with The Open University to grow our future nursing workforce has been shortlisted for the Nursing Times Workforce Team of the Year award.

This recognition celebrates the hard work of our clinical education team to create a more inclusive pathway into nursing, offering all placements in our services and accessible entry requirements which have opened doors for aspiring local nurses from diverse backgrounds.
Since the scheme’s launch in February 2025, 19 people have begun studying for a BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Degree, with another 26 people waiting to be interviewed for a placement to begin their studies in February 2026.
Acting Deputy Director of People Laura Fuller said: “I am incredibly proud that we are able to be national leaders in ensuring that nursing is a more accessible profession.
“With our unique offer in partnership with The Open University, we are now able to offer all placements within Torbay and South Devon services and offer accessible entry requirements, meaning there are more options for our population. I am proud that this work is being recognised with the shortlisting to Nursing Times Workforce Team of the Year 2025.”
The Devon International Recruitment Hub, a Devon-wide service hosted by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is also a finalist in the Nursing Times Workforce Awards in two categories: Best UK Employer of the Year for Nursing Staff and Workforce Team of the Year.
The winners will be announced at the Nursing Times Workforce Awards ceremony in November. Read more at: Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust’s Clinical Education team shortlisted for prestigious national award.
Channel 4 and BBC Spotlight filming

We were delighted to welcome Channel 4 News to Torbay Hospital last month as part of a news feature on art and wellbeing in the NHS.
Channel 4’s health and social care editor, Victoria Macdonald, spent the day with our artist in residence, Helen Snell, to explore how art can help colleagues express themselves during times of difficulty. The news feature was inspired by Helen’s exhibition, called And breath, said the machine, which explores the reactions and feelings of our people who worked for us during the pandemic. The exhibition is on permanent display in our board room.
The crew spent time with colleagues who worked on this project including members of pharmacy, estates and former colleagues who have now retired, and our Chief Executive, Joe Teape. Our hospital choir also performed two songs which were inspired by the exhibition, in our chapel at Torbay Hospital.
We also welcomed BBC Spotlight in to Torbay Hospital earlier this month to help raise awareness of our new myrecovery app, which helps people prepare for hip and knee surgery.

The app was launched in July and is so far being used by more than 250 people to prepare for and recover from surgery. The app contains interactive exercise videos, articles and the ability to submit a daily pain score to their clinician to help monitor and track their progress.
Thank you to Channel 4 and BBC Spotlight for helping us to tell our stories.
