Six months to go until the launch of our new Electronic Patient Record

EPIC EPR 6 months left until launch banner graphic

There’s just six months to go until we introduce our new electronic patient record (EPR) system on 03 April 2026.

This is one of the most significant digital changes we have ever made and is part of the wider One Devon EPR programme, which we’re delivering in partnership with University Hospitals Plymouth and the Royal Devon. Together, we’re building a shared electronic system using Epic software that will transform how health and care services work across Devon.

The EPR will replace paper records with a single digital record that follows each person throughout their care journey. Whether someone is being supported in the community, visiting their local hospital or attending a specialist clinic elsewhere in Devon, their care team will be able to access the same up-to-date information, all in one place.

For our patients it will mean:

  • Not needing to repeat the same story multiple times
  • Less paperwork and duplication
  • More coordinated care across different services

The system also includes a secure patient portal (MY CARE), which will make it easier for people to stay informed about their care. Through the MY CARE portal, they will be able to view appointment information, test results and secure messages from their care team. MY CARE can be accessed using a phone, tablet or computer.

The Epic system is already live at the Royal Devon sites across northern and eastern Devon and is helping staff and patients benefit from quicker access to information, reduced delays and improved communication. During the coming months, features will be introduced that continue to build on what is working well.

We will be sharing our EPR progress at our Annual Members’ Meeting and keeping the conversation going in the run-up to go-live in April 2026. There will be more stories, videos and behind-the-scenes updates in the coming months.

Our adult inpatient services are rated highly by people we’ve cared for

People who use our adult inpatient services have once again spoken highly about the kind and compassionate care they have received.

Their experiences have been published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its adult inpatient survey results, which provide an insight into the views of 527 people who shared their experiences of our services with the CQC. Our results are broadly in line with most trusts across the UK.

People said they were treated with respect and dignity, and we scored very highly in areas including kindness and compassion and the quality of the care and treatment they received (which has remained unchanged since 2023). People also said they were given enough privacy when examined or treated.

They also said they trusted and had confidence in the doctors and nurses who cared for them, they were included in conversations and decisions about their care, and we did everything to help control their pain.

The hard work of our cleaners was also recognised with a consistently high rating of the cleanliness of hospital rooms and wards.

Chief Nurse Nicola McMinn said: “These results reflect that our high standards of care and patient experience are recognised by people who use our services. I am so pleased that for the third year in a row people have told us that they felt the care they received was compassionate and kind, and they trusted the advice of those who are involved in their care; this is something we should all feel incredibly proud of.”
