Surgical team welcomes Versius, a new robotic system

We are really excited to welcome our as yet un-named new temporary member of our colorectal and upper GI surgical team.
During the next six months our surgical team at Torbay Hospital will use the Versius Plus robotic system to treat a range of conditions such as colorectal cancer, gallbladder removal and liver disease, as part of a new working collaboration with CMR Surgical.
Surgeons will operate the robotic system using console controllers similar to those used by gamers to control the robot’s arms, and a 3D screen which shows the area being operated on to enable surgeons to have greater precision during the procedure. Patients whose surgery is performed by a robotic system also generally have a quicker recovery time.
At a celebration event earlier this month, where representatives from CMR Surgical introduced the first Versius Plus at Torbay Hospital, Consultant Adam Kimble said: “This is a big day for us and we’re now able to offer the benefits of robotic-assisted surgery to people in Torbay and South Devon. It will mean shorter hospital stays, reduced post-operative pain and a quicker return to normal activities.
“It’s a really exciting opportunity and is in-line with the NHS 10 Year Plan to show how we’re using cutting-edge technology to deliver care to people in Torbay and South Devon.”
The first patients are expected to benefit from the introduction of the Versius robotic system in October.
Emergency department brickwork complete
We’re making great strides with the redevelopment of our emergency department.
The brickwork has now been completed, most of the window frames have been installed and the building is watertight. It’s now possible to really envisage the increased footprint of the space, which will have a major impact for patients and improve the experience of our people working in ED.
Nevada Construction is now moving inside, with work underway to create the internal partitions and install mechanical and electrical systems, including pipework for heating and cabling for lighting and other electrics. Thank you to our patients, staff and ambulance colleagues for your support as this project continues. It’s not always easy doing construction projects in a live environment and with everyone’s co-operation and patience things are progressing well.
