Torbay Hospital League of Friends generously funds new computed tomography (CT) scanner for Radiology Department
Thousands of people in Torbay and South Devon will receive a faster diagnosis and treatment for conditions including cancer, heart disease and brain and bone problems, thanks to the generosity of Torbay Hospital League of Friends.
The charity fundraisers generously paid for a new state-of-the-art CT scanner, costing £421,695, to replace one of the hospital’s three CT scanners when it reached the end of its life.
A CT scan provides a detailed diagnostic image of inside the body, including bones, muscles, fat, organs and blood vessels, to allow clinicians to diagnose treat and support their patients who need urgent care.
Around 40,000 CT scans are carried out across Torbay and South Devon every year and the scanners play a vital role in helping to speed up the time people are waiting to be seen and diagnosed for a range of conditions or need follow-up care.

Generous donation helps local people recover from strokes

People recovering from strokes and their families are benefitting from a garden makeover, thanks to Dawlish Water Rotary Club.
The prize winners from Club’s popular pub quiz were asked to nominate a local charity to receive their prize. Winners, The Globe, chose to support Torbay and South Devon NHS Charity and specifically Templar Ward at Newton Abbot Community Hospital which supports people recovering from strokes.
Rachel Saunders, Ward Manager, said: “We were delighted to receive this very kind donation which has certainly brightened up our decking area. We used the donation to buy plants and compost and colleagues donated their time to do the planning, planting and organising. Our decking area is a wonderful extension of our ward, allowing patients and their families a peaceful, relaxing space to spend time together. Having these new plants brings a lovely splash of colour to the area and is making a real difference.”
